Typhoon Nina in the Philippines

Typhoon Nina in the Philippines

30 January

Please join us in continuing to pray for all those affected by Typhoon Nina which struck the Philippines on Christmas Day. Lift up every child and family who lost a loved one, home or livelihood.

Our colleagues in the Philippines are pleased to report that they’ve visited all affected church partners and completed a rapid damage assessment. We now know that 21 church partners were affected by the storm. 2 were destroyed, 10 were damaged significantly whilst the remaining 9 received minimal damage.

3 Compassion-supported children were impacted. Their homes were damaged and they lost household goods and school supplies.

Give thanks that our church partners are reaching out and providing support to local families. Keep praying for the regions of Albay, Catanduanes and Camarines Sur as they rebuild and recover from the disaster.

One of our church partners in Baranggay in the Philippines has sent us some specific prayer requests in the aftermath of Typhoon Nina.

United Church of Christ in the Philippines asks us to:

  •  Pray for provision for families in the local community who lost their homes. They report that many local houses were completely destroyed.
  • Give thanks that no children from the project lost their lives.
  • Pray for strength and resources for the church as they repair damaged rooms and facilities.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my saviour.” Psalm 18:2

13 January

Typhoon Nina (locally known as Nock-ten) struck the Philippines on Christmas day, making landfall over Catanduanes province on the Bicol peninsula.

Weeks later, many areas continue to experience significant challenges. Albay and Camarines Sur remain without power, making it hard for us to communicate with our church partners.

Compassion Philippines estimates that eight of our partners are badly damaged, although we are still waiting for firm details. They also estimate that more than 500 children’s homes were destroyed, and 800 damaged. Again the communication challenges mean they are waiting for confirmation of these numbers.

Please join us in praying for every child and family in the Philippines affected by Nina. Lift up all of those who have lost homes and livelihoods.

Please pray as Compassion Philippines staff visit the affected areas to support our church partners and assess the extent of the damage. Pray they would be able to provide quick and effective assistance with rebuilding.
